What people can expect in the first divorce lawyer consultation

It is an unfortunate reality that many marriages end in divorce. Kentucky actually has one of the highest rates of divorce out of any state in the country. According to data collected by the United States Census Bureau, Kentucky has a divorce rate of 13.2 percent

It is a daunting proposition for anyone considering divorce to meet with an attorney, but it is an essential step. Many lawyers offer initial consultations where the attorney simply talks the person through viable options. There are a few things people can plan on going through during this meeting, and it is important for the person to be ready with a few items as well.

Clear, easy-to-understand language

Numerous complex legal theories are out there. Attorneys realize everyday people may not understand all this information, which is why divorce attorneys go through everything with clients in simple language. Clients can also expect to receive compassion. Divorce is extremely emotional, and an attorney is not going to make the client feel bad for pursuing this option.

Certain documentation

When a person contacts a divorce lawyer, the attorney will tell the spouse what items to bring into the first meeting. Some typical items include:

  • Prenuptial agreements
  • Tax returns
  • Pay stubs
  • Birth certificates of any children

It is also a recommendation that spouses meeting with a lawyer should write down a list of questions. It is easy to forget to ask something critical during the actual meeting. Lay everything out clearly before going in.

No commitments

Scheduling an initial consultation does not mean the spouse absolutely has to go through with the divorce. The person may still be on the fence about whether this is what he or she truly wants. Meeting with a lawyer can even help sway the spouse in one direction or the other. Lawyers do not have to serve any paperwork at this point. The first meeting is simply to acquire information and nothing else.
